Many teens are discovering they love the ease and aesthetic appeal of Invisalign Teen®, a system of clear aligners designed especially for teenagers. This treatment is great for most lifestyles because you can still eat your favorite foods, clean your teeth with ease, and enjoy an orthodontic treatment that is practically invisible.

If you are wondering if Invisalign Teen is right for you, come see Dr. Randy Wright. Orthodontic treatment depends on your needs. While metal braces are still the best option in some cases and are still a popular choice among teens, Invisalign Teen is becoming more common.

A clear aligner is a thin plastic covering called a “tray” that fits over the top or bottom teeth. Our orthodontist will provide you with a series of aligners that are computer designed to fit your smile and gradually shift your teeth into better positions. Typically, you will wear each tray for about two weeks and then swap it out with a new tray that will shift your teeth even more.

Your aligners should be worn for about 22 hours each day, and can be removed for meals, oral care, and important social events. Even when worn, your clear aligners will be hard for others to see. Because your aligners are removable, they will not complicate your oral care routine. The soft plastic of the aligner is less likely to cause irritation to the gums and cheeks than metal braces, and your teen does not need to worry about poking wires or having a broken bracket fixed.

Until recently, clear aligners were not recommended for teens because it was believed teens would not wear them for the recommended 22 hours a day, and their still-erupting teeth would disrupt any precise movement planning. However, advanced technology has resolved these concerns by providing compliance indicators and eruption tabs. Compliance indicators are colored dots that fade the more they are worn to reveal if the patient is on track with their treatment plan. Eruption tabs are designed to maintain space for teeth that have not fully emerged.
